Finding Free vs. Paid Resources For Affiliate Marketing
More than ever, people have the desire to venture out on their own and become their own boss. It all sounds great on the surface but there are two factors that need to be taken into consideration. The first is capital and second is the risk involved and neither one can be taken lightly. Today’s market requires a substantial investment even for a small business and the risk factor is even scarier. According to statistics, approximately 90% of small businesses will fail within one year.
To overcome those two factors, people are turning to affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing can be started with little or no capital and there really isn’t any risk involved. If you possess any sales or marketing ability, can motivate yourself and are willing to work hard, affiliate marketing might be right for you.
I’m sure most of you get bombarded daily with offers for seminars and courses that claim they have the secrets to becoming wealthy almost instantly. They claim to have all the right tools to get your business up and running and become a millionaire. There are many people who participate in these types of seminars and courses thinking they will have a thriving business.
Unfortunately, many of these courses and seminars turn out to be a big disappointment and some of these courses can be quite expensive. Not only do you have the cost of the seminar or course but you may have travel and hotel expenses. Usually the person who is holding the seminar is on some type of promotional tour and although you will be presented with some valuable information, their underlying goal is to sell you their latest book or some new software. In many cases people will find everything presented at the seminar is contained in their book. Then you realize you could have saved lots of money by just purchasing the book and reading it. Please don’t get the wrong impression, there are some excellent courses and seminars out there but they are costly and the good ones are few and far between.
While I’m a firm believer that you should learn all you can regarding affiliate marketing, I don’t necessarily agree that seminars are the best way or only way to achieve the knowledge you are seeking. On the other hand, I do think that books will provide much of the needed learning. You can learn most of what you need through books plus you’ll save lots of money. There are many great books written on affiliate marketing and they can guide you step by step on ways to set up your affiliate marketing business. You’ll find most of these books online by searching places such as Amazon.com or eBay.com
Of course, you’ll also find that the Internet is outstanding as a resource for affiliate marketing. All you need to do it type affiliate marketing into any major search engine and you’ll be amazed at the amount of information you will find. If affiliate marketing is something that appeals to you and you are determined, you’ll find loads of free courses on the subject. In many cases, the free courses offered online, are as good as the paid courses and seminars.
Another excellent resource is news letters and magazines. Most newsletters are free and they do contain excellent advice and information about various affiliate programs. This is a great resource because the information/advice comes from people who are already working as affiliate marketers and doing what you are looking forward to doing.
Lastly, joining an affiliate program is very advantageous. You will find that most programs will give you support and additional resources. It only makes sense that these programs want you to succeed because the more income you generate, the more they make. They usually provide a support network that is available 24/7. Generally, you will find an affiliate manager who you can contact and many marketing materials you can use to help with your promotions. You will probably find that many of the affiliate programs will turn out to be your best resource and one you can count on.
If you are seriously considering becoming an affiliate marketer, first explore what you are getting into. Don’t waste your hard earned money on those costly seminars and courses. Always look for books, newsletters and online information. I think you will find that some of the best information and resources are available for free.
If you currently do any affiliate marketing, what are some of the free or low cost resources you use or would recommend that would be helpful to newcomers?

Hi Robert,
What you say is completely agreeable. Affiliates are the invisible life force of the internet, directing traffic and cashing in on the potential. Affiliates are not talked about on CNN or the BBC and affiliates are usually disregarded in ignorance. I would stick my neck out here and say that affiliates drive at least 80% of internet marketing sales and yet nobody takes about it. Its a ’silent’ underground force driving the economy when Wall Street is feeling the pain. Maybe one day the mainstream will catch on, but until that day come, let the silent underground affiliate machine prevail. All the better affiliats are not mentioned in the mainstream economy news otherwise everyone would know about it, and those who actually take action, are inevitably will be the real winners.
Nice post Robert, hope to hear from you soon.
John
Hello John,
What a wonderful observation of the affiliate marketing business. I’ve never heard it put like that but I agree that affiliates don’t get the recognition they so well deserve. I’m not sure about the 80% you mention but with tens of thousands of affiliate marketers, the number has to be way up there. Yes, the winners are always those who take action.
Great hearing from you and I very much appreciate your visit.
Hi Robert,
I think learning as much as you can from the free information available is a must. When people start out online and choose to do affiliate sales, they often have little or no money to invest.
Forums can hold a lot of useful information. One site that helped me a lot when I first started on line was Lynn Terry’s SSWT forum. She has a lot of great information, and is always available to answer questions. She is a great resource, and she herself is a super affiliate.
Also site like yours can be a valuable resource to newbies.
Great Post Robert.
Heather Masson´s last blog ..BE SMART – Use Google Friend Connect to Your Advantage.
Hello Heather,
That’s another good resource you mentioned. Forums can be an excellent place for finding free and valuable information. People who participate in forums such as the one you mentioned, are generally eager to share advice, tips, tools, etc.
Thanks for the compliment and it’s always a pleasure seeing you here.
Hi Robert. Another good post. The point you make regarding being “bombarded daily with offers for seminars and courses that claim they have the secrets to becoming wealthy almost instantly”, is IMO particularly important for newcomers to online marketing to be wary of. It can be so easy to get caught up with the 100’s of email offers, etc. and lose sight of the “prize”.
Heather mentions Forums as excellent resources for information and tips. I totally agree. One of the forums I visit often and find very useful is the WarriorForum.
Some good, free software resources for those on a tight budget are:
- OpenOffice, good substitute for MS Office and similar.
- GIMP, good substitute for Adobe PhotoShop and similar.
- Komposer, reasonable substitute for Dreamweaver and similar web design software.
- FileZilla – good, free FTP software.
The list could go on endlessly….
And let us not forget the various Social Networking sites for gaining mass exposure and developing a following (and a list).
Robert, I think you have stimulated me to write a post series on this

Hi Richard,
It is very easy for many people to get caught up with all the hype and begin suffering from info overload. Once that happens, it brings most people to a halt.
Yes the Warrior Forum ( http://www.warriorforum.com/ )is an excellent resource for learning about internet marketing.
Your list of resources is appreciated and I’m glad I got your creative juices flowing.
Thanks for stopping by and I do appreciate your comments.
Nice post as you have rightly said investing capital should not be taken lightly and some of these people are just a sham be careful where we put our own hard earn cash which affiliate program would you recommend from a personal point of view
lawmacs´s last blog ..More Traffic or Better Conversation
Hi lawmacs,
It is unfortunate that there are so many scams out there and that’s why I always recommend that people research everything before spending their hard earned money. As for what program I would personally recommend, I would have to say there are several that I like but I feel Holly Mann’s Honest Riches ( http://successaffiliatemarketing.com/blog/goto/honestriches/ ) is one of the best. I have her program and refer to it often. It’s particularly good for those first starting out as affiliate marketers.
Great hearing from you again and I appreciate your visit and comment.
Hi Robert,
Affiliate marketing it is by far the cheapest and easiest way to start making money online. As you said, there is no cost involved in product creation and you dont need to hire any sales copywriter that are very expensive, you just send people to the owner of the product you need only to collect your money.

Hello Micah,
I hope you do come by regularly. I have visited your blog as well and I too will visit often.
I appreciate the visit and thanks for the kind words.
I second that! Even though it can be rough at times, I have found that free promoting is superior to paid. It has worked out very well for me.

Chris´s last blog ..Inspire Me Please
Hi Chris,
Glad to hear things are working out well for you. I paid a visit to your blog (your blog title intrigued me) but I was unable to leave a comment because I didn’t have an ID for any of your options.
Glad you stopped by and hope to see you here often.
I will recommend two sources to learn about affiliate marketing without any cost. First, subscribe to your blog and follow you on Twitter. Second, is Google it. I am not joking, it does not make sense to pay for information that are available online, for free and with real value. Guys like you work hard to make this possible without asking for anything in return. I am sorry but you have to be “not so intelligent” to jump in a paid course when you are just beginning. I would recommend a lot of research, many trial and errors and once you are satisfied about your knowledge, and want to move to the next level, maybe…. Until then, stick to the basics, learn form other peoples experience and put in motion the new knowledge you have acquired

Hello DiTesco,
As usual, I knew I could count on you to come up with a couple of brilliant resources.
As you mentioned, it is particularly important for “newbies” to learn all they can before spending money on courses. There is an abundance of free information out there and all it takes is searching for it on the net.
Thank you once again DiTesco for your much appreciated comments.
