Be Successful But Be Careful As Affiliate Marketers
Affiliate marketing is an excellent way to earn some income and it provides the means for many to set up a home based business without lots of upfront capital or risk. When you become an affiliate, you do work for someone but you are rewarded for your personal efforts. The income you earn is based on your performance and not on the hours or days you work. The harder you work at it, the more money you can make. The merchants and vendors handle all the product development, resources and customer issues and it’s your job to promote the products and services in the ways that you feel will be most productive. Basically, you will be selling other people’s “stuff” and earning a commission for every sale you generate.
As I’m sure you’re aware, there are many opportunities out there for affiliate marketers. However, you need to be very careful because for all the legitimate opportunities, there are those that are scams and ready to con you out of your hard earned cash. It’s unfortunate but the Internet has made it very easy for the con artist to operate and even do quite well.
So, before diving in the affiliate marketing business, it’s highly recommended that you do some research and check everything you possibly can. One of the first rules of thumb is: don’t do business with anyone who doesn’t present you with a fixed address and/or phone number. If all you see is their email address, I suggest you look for a different company. It is much to risky doing business only by email and it makes it way to easy for the con artists to slip away never to be found. When they do slip away, it’s usually with your money.
Once you do find a company that you are interested in, check to see if there are any initial costs involved. You will find that in most cases there are zero costs to get started but there are a few companies that require a minimal fee to get started. If you find that to be the case, ask if you can pay the cost through your commissions. Most companies are more than willing to accept that. In the event you find a company that requires a lot of costs up front, look for something else. There’s a good chance they will take your money and leave you with a worthless product.
When you do plan to join an affiliate marketing program always see what type of support you can expect to receive. There should be an affiliate manager or program manager available to answer your questions and concerns. There should also be advice and resources on the best ways to market their products. How you market and promote the products is entirely up to you but well established programs generally know what methods work best and it’s always a good idea to see what they are. Any legitimate company would want to help you as much as possible because the more successful you are, the more they also earn.
Always be mindful of the fact that affiliate marketing is not that easy and it does require hard work. The difference between the affiliate marketing business and most others is; the risk is very low. Be very skeptical of the companies that offer huge earnings with little or no work involved. The reality is it just don’t happen that way. There are great success stories of affiliate marketers who make very large sums of money but they worked extremely hard to get where they are. Anyone can do it but it don’t happen overnight.
Affiliate marketing is an outstanding way to begin working for yourself. Starting out can be difficult and you may find that you need to work harder than ever but you have an opportunity to be very successful and make a lot of money. To be successful as an affiliate marketer, you will need to work hard, be determined, know how to motivate yourself, take action and exercise patience. If you’re up for the challenge and have those qualities, the rewards can be very lucrative.
This is worth mentioning again: Before joining or signing up for any type of program, do your homework. Research the companies and merchants before getting involved. All the resources to do your research are readily available on the net so use them.
If you currently do any affiliate marketing, what are some of the things you consider when joining a program?

Hi Robert,
Great advice and the main things I personally look for when I look to promote other peoples products is usually the following;
1. The relevancy of the products to the niche I am marketing to
2. The amount of commission I will receive for promoting the products
3. (This ones is an important one), I also look at the webpage or product sales page that I would be promoting from a buyers perspective. I put myself in the buyer’s shoes that I will be marketing the product to and go through the buying process as if I were the buyer. Whilst I do this and if I like it and think that I might buy the product or service myself if I were the buyer then I usually give it the thumbs and go ahead and promote it to my audience.
- The last think I look for is the product owner’s, marketing skills. I ask myself the question, ‘has the owner tested the product sales using his or her own marketing budget, rather than my own.’ If, I’m convinced of the product owners marketing skills and that the product sales funnel actually converts, then I’m happy to commit to promoting and earning commissions from that affiliation.
I appreciate the opportunity to share this information Robert.
Thanks again,
John

Hello John,
I like your style and I’m in complete agreement with you. I too feel that one the most important things to take into consideration is: would you buy the product for yourself? If you have no interest in purchasing the product, don’t promote it. If you do, it’s more likely than not that your lack of genuine enthusiasm will come across in your sales and promotional efforts.
Thanks for sharing that information John. Your visits and comments here are greatly appreciated.

I have been very careful in selecting an affiliate program on which I will be a part. As you have mentioned here, I do a lot of homework regrading the background of my potential affiliate. I’m still looking but not on a rush.
Hello Walter,
Glad to hear you’re doing your homework.
Take your time and choose a program that you feel confident in and comfortable with.
Your comments here are appreciated and I hope to see you here often. By the way, I visited your blog and enjoyed reading your articles.

You could of course just create your own product and cut out the middleman and still get rewarded for your efforts. For example, if you write your own eBook and sell it, then you should get 100% back in the rewards.
But regular AM, personally I took a break because of the lack of time and the learning ropes. But eventually I’ll go back when I have more time.

Hello Jay,
Yes, you could create your own product and keep all the profits but you would also need to deal with customer issues, create a sales page, thank you and delivery page, etc. If you decide to have affiliates help sell the product, you’d be paying them a commission as well.
I hope you do decide to get back to AM and let us know if we can be of any help.

Hi Robert, Affiliate Marketing is certainly not an easy way to make money, but once you find the right product and the right network to work with then it can be rewarding to get that check every month. On the other hand you are so correct that some affiliate networks can be indeed hard to work with or are not on the up & up, one must really do their homework. I really look for customer care, can I call the Company I’m working with? And will they help me when I need help with something? If I can only communicate via the net, I’m sorry I won’t go with them. I’m a very instant gratification type of person I want to talk to someone when I want them! I guess I might be considered hard to work with.lol No I’m not really. Just like results. Great post Robert with lots of tips. Thanks jj
