AffilMktgHave you ever felt that you are underpaid and under appreciated by your employer? Perhaps you feel like your skill and expertise is being wasted. Do you work hard at your job and apply all your know how and ability for a boss that gives you little in return? Rather than work for someone else, have you ever considered putting your skills to work for yourself? Maybe you have considered starting your own business but the start up investment was out of your reach. If this describes you, maybe becoming an affiliate marketer could be just what you are looking for.

Working for yourself and starting a business is a goal and a desire many of us have but there are a couple of obstacles that stop us in our tracks. The first obstacle is the initial up front investment of starting a small business and the second is the risk involved. The smallest business today requires a significant amount of money to get started. Even in today’s tough economy, there are some people who are lucky enough to get financing but the risk factor is still there. Depending on which statistics you read, it appears that over 50% of small businesses fail within the first year and up to 95% fail in the first 5 years. If you’re one of the lucky ones who make it past the first year, it can take as long as 5 years before you are profitable. That’s way to long for most of us to wait. What we need is a steady income so we can meet our daily, weekly and monthly obligations.

For those of you who want independence with little or no risk, becoming an affiliate marketer may be your solution. As an affiliate marketer, your primary function is to drive traffic to a merchant’s site and increase their sales. There are several methods to accomplishing that and you can focus on a specific line of products or services. The merchants/vendors handle the product creation, delivery, marketing tools and customer issues and the affiliate promotes the products or services in whatever way they feel is best. You are paid a commission or flat rate for each sale you generate. Obviously, the harder you work and the more sales you make, the more money you will earn.

If you have some experience building web sites or blogs and are the creative type, this could be an ideal opportunity for you. You would be able to build an online affiliate business. By opening an account with one of the major search engines, you could earn some additional revenue by placing ads on your sites. Google’s Adsense program would be an ideal way for you to get started. This is a no cost, no risk opportunity to start earning some extra money while you build your affiliate business. All the advertising costs and ad placement is handled by Google which allows you to focus on driving traffic to your site. You probably won’t earn loads of money from this type of program but the additional income is always welcome.

Generally speaking, the people who make the best affiliate marketers are those who are flexible in their work schedule and enjoy being independent. Affiliates are rewarded not by how many hours they work but how well they perform. Therefore, people who need or desire having a flexible work schedule will get the most benefit as an affiliate marketer. You would be able to organize your work schedule around all your other commitments and spend more time with your family. If you’re a person who can keep yourself motivated and are able to work independently, becoming an affiliate might be right for you.

You really should give some thought to the possibility of becoming an affiliate marketer if you are motivated, creative and have a strong desire to succeed. With little to no cost and zero risk, you could be running your own affiliate business from your home. You might even want to try affiliate marketing on a part time basis while you continue with your regular 9-5 job. Once you learn the ropes and see some success, you’ll be able to switch over to a full time basis. Once you do, you’ll have the benefit of working when you want and be rewarded for your efforts. Compared to working for someone else, I think you’ll find that there’s no better feeling than working for yourself. This business is not for everyone but if you’re a person that has the qualities it takes to be an affiliate, it’s definitely worth considering. After all, you’ve got little to lose and much to gain.
