You can tell me “great post” all you like.

I agree that your goals shouldn’t be boring. Kind of hard to motivate yourself to achieve a boring goal. As for a 5 year goal, that’s fine but you must have other short term goals as stepping stones.

Anyone who goes into a business expecting to fail has no business even making an attempt at it.

Great post as usually (hope you don’t mind me sounding like a broken record machine).
I find the key is to set specific goals that are not boring. You act differently when your goal is stretch versus boring. When you expect to earn a lot of money within 1 year, you act different than if you think you’re business (or career) will be successful in 5 years. Usually, the 5 years becomes a way of saying “never”.
Also, don’t go into business (or anything) and expect to “fail” or “not do well for a while”. It’s self fulfilling.

Hi everyone, and thanks to Robert for a great post. I agree that all the points listed above are important.
I think one of my greatest weaknesses is not following through properly – I get a good idea or two but never quite put in enough work to complete it and maximise it… my focus for 2010 will be on completion!

Hi James,

In my opinion they are all important. You’re right about setting goals that are not attainable. That only leads to major disappointment. A person is much better off starting with a goal that can be reached. It will then motivate that person to aim a little higher on the next one. Nothing feels better than reaching that first goal.

I also agree with you guys about #1, but I also think #2 is very important. A person must be passionate, but at the same time they must not expect what is close to impossible. If they do, then they will only be lead to discouragement.
