Sound Advice For The “Newbie” Affiliate Marketer
Do you ever get the feeling that you’re overworked and undervalued? If you do, you are not alone. More and more people are increasingly growing tired of the same old 9-5 grind. Seems like nowadays there isn’t much incentive to be more productive. Most 9-5ers receive a weekly (or is it weakly) paycheck without the regular increases you got in the past.
It should come as no surprise that the number of people who want to work for themselves continues to grow. As you are aware, starting your own business in today’s marketplace can require a great deal of capital and an even greater risk. Those who do start their own business soon find out how risky it is and realize that being profitable can take several years. Since most of us have financial obligations that need to be taken care of, we can’t afford to wait several years.
One of the ways people have found to bridge this gap is becoming an affiliate marketer. As an affiliate, you’ll be able to work for yourself and rather than build a new business, you’ll be growing an existing one. By doing so, there is very little risk and you’ll be able to focus on making some money.
I’m sure many of you have heard that this is an easy business and in some regard, that is true. There are many great features and benefits when it comes to affiliate marketing but it is not as easy as some will lead you to believe. There are certain steps that need to be followed and loads of advice you should listen to before diving head first into affiliate marketing.
One of the very first things you need to do before you commit to an affiliate program is to do an evaluation of your skills, experience and expertise. Are you able to motivate yourself? Do you have any business skills? What skills do you need? Are you willing to work as many hours as necessary? Are you willing to learn? As I previously mentioned, there is very little risk but you still want to make the most of your new venture. As an affiliate, you should have some basic sales and business skills. If you don’t have those skills, you must be willing to learn them. Remember, the products and services you’ll be promoting, don’t sell themselves. If that were the case, the merchants and vendors would not have a need for affiliates. All of your income will be based on how well you perform. In this business, if you do not perform well, you will struggle.
The next step which should be given careful consideration are the products you plan to promote. It’s always best to choose products or services you’re familiar with or have used personally. By doing so, you will sound more sincere with your marketing efforts. Of course, you will also want to see if the products are salable. Even though you are familiar with or have used the product yourself, it doesn’t mean others will buy it. Without buyers, there’s no point in promoting it. You can research the company and find out how well their products sell. Also find out what the return rate is. Don’t be taken in by all the hype such as; “the sky is the limit” or “our affiliates are earning thousands per day” type speeches. You need to know what “you” can realistically achieve.
Last but certainly not least, don’t go into this business with unrealistic expectations. One of the biggest reasons that many online businesses fail is the lack of immediate results. This isn’t much different than any other business. It takes time and a lot of hard work. The more you put into it, the more lucrative it will become. Once you know what’s realistic, set your goals and go for it. If you exceed your goals, that’s even better
Becoming an affiliate marketer is a great way to start a business of your own. If you enjoy being independent and can motivate yourself, this could be an excellent business for you. Remember, before you dive in, research and learn all you can. Set realistic goals for yourself and take action. With the right mindset, work ethic and patience, you will be on your way to becoming a successful affiliate marketer.
If you already do some affiliate marketing, what has been your experience? Do you have any advice you would like to share with those who are just starting out?

Great post Robert. Motivation and the willingness to learn new things are a great way to go about being an affiliate marketer. A piece of advice that I would give someone wanting to step into the arena is this:
1. Envision where you want to see yourself in a pre-defined time frame.
2. Set up a reasonable work schedule so as not to become overwhelmed by your initial vision.
3. Work constantly toward your desired goal and try not to become distracted by nay-sayers and personal problems.
5. Energy follows thought – What is meant is that your #1 will eventually be your outcome if done with patience, motivation and persistence.

Very nice post, I think all business needs a lot of motivation and hard work, nothing is going to be free if you don’t work for it. I liked the part where you said that it is important to promote products that you are familiar with, because you are being authentic, and it will give the client a sense of security.

Hi Robert, Great article with sound advice regarding starting an affiliate marketing business, to step carefully and make sure that you can sell the product that you have picked. As it is always being said “do what you know best” so make sure you are selling something that you can stand behind. The great thing about affiliate marketing is the sky is the limit, there are so many different products to pick from that there is no way one can’t find something that really works for you. Hi jj,
People would probably do much better as affiliate marketers if they took the necessary time and learned as much as possible before diving in. The problem is, many people rush into this and expect immediate results. When the results don’t show quickly, they give up and and move on to something else.
It’s always a pleasure seeing you here and I thank you for the excellent feedback.

Newbie tips? This works also for advanced affiliate marketers who sometimes forget that there are millions of people trying to do the same thing everyday. The only thing that will make you stand out against the rest is hard work and and plenty of patience:) It does not happen overnight:) Thumbs up Robert.
Which reminds me, how are you? Hope all is well. I’m still trying to find that momentum and get back in track for good. Offline responsibilities are killing me, lol

There are way to many methods to increase traffic to list them all here. There are both free and paid ways to increase traffic. One of my favorite free methods is using social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook. Just be careful how you use those sites. You might also get a free account at Entrecard: http://successaffiliatemarketing.com/blog/goto/Entrecard/ That also brings me quite a bit of traffic.
Also do a search on Google for “free traffic methods” That should keep you busy.
