7 Ways Of Directing Traffic To Your Affiliate Programs
Recently, one of my readers said they were having problems driving traffic to their affiliate offers and that inspired me to write this post. There are many ways of driving traffic but I felt it would be most helpful to provide some of the easiest, most effective and free or low cost methods.
Knowing how to drive traffic to your web site or blog is absolutely necessary if you want to achieve any level of success as an affiliate. You might have a fantastic looking site, you may be highly motivated and you may have all the other necessary resources but without good quality traffic, you aren’t going to make much money. Don’t let all your hard work go down the tube because nobody is visiting your site.
Since affiliate marketing continues to grow very rapidly, the marketplace has become highly competitive and driving traffic to your web sites and blogs is more challenging than ever. Because of all the new sites that continue to come online daily, it has become more difficult than ever to stand out from the crowd. If you have the drive, determination and patience to stick with affiliate marketing and make some money, here are some of the preferred methods to drive traffic to your site:
1. Don’t waste your visitor’s valuable time
Now more than ever, it is extremely important that you understand and are very knowledgeable about your market. Your goal is to build a solid customer base by getting targeted traffic from people who are interested in the content and theme of your site. Provide meaningful content and you’ll show your visitors that their effort was worthwhile and they didn’t waste their valuable time by visiting your site.
2. Google is your friend
Some people make the mistake of ignoring the free targeted traffic that is generated from the major search engines. That traffic should never be ignored, in fact it should be relied on. By use of the correct keywords you should keep trying to move up to the top rankings of all the popular search engines. Obviously, the higher you rank in the searches, the easier it will be for people to access your site.
3. The pen is mightier than the sword
One of the most effective and proven ways to increase traffic to your site is by writing articles that contain unique and useful content. When a person reads a well written article on a topic that they have an interest in, they will in most cases visit your site to see what else you have. There are a multitude of places where you can submit articles and here are a few of the best: EzineArticles, ArticleDashboard and GoArticles.
4. Show some link love
Another great way to not only market your site but drive traffic as well, is to exchange links with other sites that are related to your niche. This is also an effective way to increase your search engines rankings. Your main task would be locating some popular blogs that are relevant to yours and contacting the webmaster requesting the possibility of a link exchange. Once you do establish communication, try to keep it on a personal level and work out the details of a link exchange that would be beneficial to both parties.
5. Yes, there is money in the list
One of your most valuable assets as an online marketer is a list of your own subscribers. I’m sure you’ve heard this many times but “the money is in the list”. Once you build your list, you’ll be able to call on them periodically to inform them about new products and services. Before you attempt selling anything to your list, you must build a relationship and trust with them. By utilizing your autoresponder, and sending some personal messages, you will be able to accomplish that. Your autoresponder is a must have tool to help keep track of and grow your list.
6. The joint venture
A joint venture or JV is described as a legal entity formed between two or more parties to undertake an economic activity together. Joint venture marketing can be one of the most effective ways to promote a product or service. Having a joint venture partner through a link exchange or ad swap can be most beneficial to both parties. When you have a joint venture partner, it allows you to reach a much broader customer base in a shorter time frame.
7. Your own affiliate program
If you are fortunate enough to have a product of your own, one of the best ways to get massive amounts of traffic is to set up your own affiliate program. By having affiliates promote your product and do the work, you allow them to drive large numbers of traffic to your site. Both you and the affiliates will benefit from this situation due to the increase in traffic and sales.
There are many other ways to increase traffic to your site such as; social bookmarking, free report or software giveaway, and holding contests. Traffic generation is something you need to focus on if you’re serious about growing as an affiliate marketer. Once you learn how to drive traffic to see your offers, you’ll be on the right track to becoming more successful as an affiliate marketer.

There’s also one I’m thinking of and that is effective for me, it’s “forum marketing”. Getting involved and participting in forums related to the niche you’re targeting and putting a link to your website in your signature is a great way to get free traffic!

Thank you Robert,
there are two other ways I use is pay per view (PPV) and manual traffic exchanges. Now if you don’t have money to pay for traffic this can be time consuming but still affective. This was a good article Robert.

Hi Bronzilla,
Great seeing you here.
Thanks for mentioning the other methods you use. I have no experience with PPV marketing and I am under the impression that it uses adware as opposed to PPC marketing.
I appreciate the visit and hope to see you here often.

Having your own affiliate program is the only one on the list I have not delved completely into. I figured I would see how well I do with second tiered aff programs first since it is the closest thing to having your own aff program. But still the product is not your own so this is definitely something worth doing.
It just takes serious focus along with the ability of coming up with a unique product. Once you come up with that there are hundreds of scripts and plugins to help with the actual running of your own affiliate program.
Robert, I think this one deserves a post all to itself

Great points, especially the one about not wasting the visitors time. You can be on some sites for a half hour before finding what you want and eventually just give up. Simplicity seems like a great way to go!
Hi Pablo,
In today’s world, saving time is an important factor. People want to find the information they seek as quickly as possible. If they find what they need on your site, you just might be able to convert them to customer or subscriber or both.
Thanks for the visit and your comments.

Hi Falak,
Glad you like the blog.
With regard to not getting approved by Google, it is very rare that they do not approve someone. I tried to see the contents of your blog but it appears not to exist. If that is what Google sees, they will not approve your account. You must have a working blog or web site with content in order for them to approve your account.
Wish you all the best!

Hey Robert, Thanks alot for your infor. i am just getting started on affiliate marketing and online business as a whole and as expected am having alot of information to review.Sometimes i actually feel as if am been overloaded. But since am determined to succed i have to keep at it. your post has great helpful information, so far i have worked on number 1,2 and now working on 4,will keep trying the rest.
plus i like your theme as a whole alot, your sidebar is very attractive. How can i do that?
Hello Lilian,
Well, you have the right attitude when you say you’re determined to succeed.
With all the information out there it is easy to get information overload. Just be selective with your information and take it one step at a time like you’re doing. Being patient goes a long way in this business.
I’m using the Flexibility theme for my blog and most of the things you see in the sidebar are done with widgets that come with most WP themes.
Thanks for visiting and your comments. I wish you the best with your online adventure.

As usual great solid tips, and if acted upon even better
Traffic generation methods are all over the place nowadays and the only way to see which ones work best is by using all available channels. Aside from your 7 methods, may I add Twitter and maybe FaceBook. Also I have found that guest posting could be a powerful way to drive good traffic to your website specially if your are able to “get in” some high authority blogs. Not difficult really, all you need is a good article and they will most likely publish it with links pointing your way.
Now #6 is definitely a strong point and if done properly can lead to many profitable projects and I can prove that by personal experience. If interested, the ComLuv doorway (below) is open for you to check it out

Yes, all the greatest tips and resources in the world are meaningless if they’re not acted upon. Of course you may add Twitter and Facebook…I use them both on a regular basis.
I personally feel that JV’s are or can be one of the most effective ways to drive traffic. Like you said, it needs to be done properly. Guess I’ll need to go through that ComLuv doorway and see what you have to say.
Thanks for visiting and for adding some additional traffic generating methods. Always a pleasure seeing you here.

Agreed with almost all of what you said here. I’m still a little “iffy” when it comes to building a list. I do have several emails I’ve collected over a period of time, however, I never really email them directly with any info about new sites to join, new opportunities, etc. I just find it would be a bit too invasive and might turn them off. :/ But I can definitely see how building a relationship with them, in the way that they know and agree to you emailing them from time to time, can be successful when it comes to affiliate marketing.

Hi TriNi,
Building a list of subscribers is becoming a necessity if you want to run a successful online business. You said it yourself…it’s critical that you first build relationships and trust with your subscribers before attempting to sell them anything. If you have your subscribers double opt-in to your list, they are giving you permission to send them an occasional email. The thing is not to abuse the privilege and if they don’t like your emails, they always have the option to unsubscribe.
I do appreciate your comments and your visit and wish you great success.

I have been podcasting since 2003 with 164 shows to date and have found that it is one of the absolute best ways to gain targeted traffic back to my sites.
You’ll find that if you have your own podcast you can publish it to dozens of free podcast directories, which can be updated automatically (via RSS feed) every time you add a new episode.
You will also find that if you get into a regular rhythm and produce shows on a predictable schedule you will gain loyal listeners (and repeat visitors) who will return each week for the latest episode.
A good podcast is also great way to attract backlinks from people (and guests) to your site.
You can offer up your podcast along with a descriptive article to your affiliates. You can have it transcribed and use it as an incentive to subscribe. You can write articles around the podcast and distribute them to other webmasters to gain additional exposure and backlinks.
I have found podcasts also get passed around and referred to often all of which gives you added exposure and drives additional traffic.

Hello James,
First, I want to welcome you to my blog.
I’ve always had an interest in podcasting and wondered if it was an effective method of driving traffic. After reading your comments, my interest has been reignited.
I appreciate your explanation of how a podcast can be beneficial to anyone who is interested in an additional traffic source.
Thanks for visiting and posting your comments. I do hope we’ll see you here often.

Hi Robert,
Thanks, much appreciated.
The other thing I have found with podcasting is that someone doesn’t have to commit to doing a podcast forever.
My wife Arlene is a good example of this she decided early on that she only wanted to do 6 30-40 minute podcasts so she could cover off some important topics for her visitors.
Her topic is kids with epilepsy (www.epilepsymoms.com) and her podcast is now published in 25+ podcast directories.
So even if someone is a little shy or not thinking that podcasting is for them — coming up with a few 30 minutes shows can go along way in helping to promote a site, building traffic and more importantly developing an audience.

Hi James,
I would have thought the shyness factor would be a major deterrent when it comes to podcasting or even videos for that matter. What you said makes sense about doing a few short podcasts to get your feet wet.
I checked out your wife’s site and I think what she is doing is very commendable. I wish both of you all the best!

Hi Robert,
Thanks for the great advice. I think it is also important for online marketers, and especially relative newbies to
1. Produce good, useful content on a regular basis
2. Occasionally do something a bit more outstanding, and
3. Connect with individuals via social networking sites in order to enhance your presence in the marketplace.
